Archaic Rider Rampin – Buy bust as replica

This head originally belonged to a fully plastic sculpture, the Rampin Horseman, from around 550 B.C. The entire work is an equestrian statue from the Archaic period of Ancient Greece, preserved only in fragments, which was masterfully carved from marble from the island of Paros and shows traces of red and black colour.

The head of the horseman shown here, which is offered as a bronze replica, was found on the Acropolis of Athens in 1877. The French embassy secretary in Athens, Georges Rampin, was able to acquire the head for his collection. Hence the name. In 1896, Rampin donated the head to the Louvre in Paris. It was not until 1936 that it was linked to the rest of the statue, which was found ten years later and is now in Athens. In order to unite the head and body, the head was copied so that the plaster cast could sit on the original body in Athens, while the original head is exhibited in the Louvre together with a cast of the body.

The rider displays many features typical of an archaic kouros, but also has some symmetrical features that break with the conventions of this early, archaic period. The Rampin Horseman was created around 550 BC by an unknown but outstanding artist who today bears the makeshift name Rampin Master. The commissioner and reason for the installation remain unknown.

Originally, it was assumed that the entire statue was part of a larger group of statues, perhaps together with another group of statues depicting Castor and Pollux on horseback, which is common on vases from this period. According to yet another theory, the statue represents the winner of a race. This theory is supported by the lovage crown on the statue, which was awarded to the winners of the Nemean Games and the Isthmian Games.

The bust is produced as a bronze cast using the traditional lost wax technique. The negative mould required for this is based on a plaster cast of the original in the Louvre.

Buy bust replica as marble casting or marble sculpture

In addition to the classic bronze casting, we also offer two other moulds for the bust shown here. The marble casting from powdered genuine white marble. And the new moulding of the antique bust as a replica by sculptors from a single block of white marble. If you are interested in such a mould, please do not hesitate to contact us. We look forward to receiving your Mail or call us.

Patinating the antique bust

Patination marks the final step in the finishing process of a bronze statue. The patina simulates the natural oxidation process that causes the bronze to weather differently over time, depending on the environmental influences on the copper alloy. We have various patina recipes in our repertoire, including one that corresponds well to the patina of preserved antique bronze statues. We will be happy to provide you with samples of suitable patinas in advance.

Individualisation of the bust replica

Each bust cast by us is engraved in the base with a serial number, date of manufacture and our company logo. The base is also engraved with your name, a lettering, the occasion of production, your own company logo or additional engraving as required.
