Some pool houses are merely functional. The Newbury Port is not. Inspired by the classic colonial architecture of Newburyport, Massachusetts, this beautifully designed glass and steel structure does more than just provide shelter—it brings character, elegance, and a touch of history to any poolside setting.
Named after the historic maritime town, once a thriving shipbuilding and trading hub, the Newbury Port pool house echoes the refined architectural traditions of its namesake. Beyond its striking appearance, it offers a practical space for preparing light refreshments, mixing a well-earned poolside drink, or providing a private area for guests to change. And when the sun sets, pool accessories and furniture can be stored safely inside, keeping the space neat and uncluttered.
Designed with proportion and presence, the Newbury Port pool house stands at 8.5 metres in height, with a 4 x 4 metre footprint. Built from fire-galvanised steel and finished with a powder coating for durability, it is made to withstand the elements with minimal maintenance. The windows, available in double or triple glazing, provide excellent insulation and an uninterrupted view of the surroundings.
Distinctive architectural details set this pool house apart. Elegant decorative arches frame the windows, while ornate gables at each corner add a touch of classic refinement. The steeply pitched roof reaches an impressive 5.6 metres, with the slim ornamental gable alone rising to 2.5 metres—an eye-catching feature that gives the building its signature look. Integrated electric roof windows ensure effortless ventilation at the push of a button, keeping the interior fresh throughout the seasons.
The Newbury Port is available in a choice of Farrow & Ball colours, as seen in the reference images. One version is finished in Lichen, a soft, earthy green that blends harmoniously with outdoor spaces. The other is presented in Cream White, a timeless ivory shade that exudes classic charm. As with all Farrow & Ball paints, the depth of pigment ensures a richness that subtly shifts with the light, giving the building an added sense of dimension.
Pool Houses & the Rise of Poolside Living
Swimming pools and their adjoining pool houses have been symbols of refined leisure for centuries. The Romans built grand bathing complexes in their villas, and by the late 19th century, well-heeled families in England and the United States had begun incorporating private pools into their estates, complete with dedicated pool houses for changing, relaxing, and entertaining.
Fast-forward to the 1930s through the 1950s, and the rise of private pools in America saw the emergence of the iconic pool boy—the diligent caretaker who ensured the water remained crystal clear, an essential feature of luxurious estates. As pools became more prevalent, so too did the role of the pool house, evolving from a simple shelter into an architectural centrepiece that reflected both function and the lifestyle of its owners.
The Newbury Port pool house follows in this tradition, offering a structure that is both practical and a reflection of refined taste. More than just a place to change or store equipment, it creates an atmosphere—an inviting setting where time slows down, drinks are poured, and summer afternoons stretch into long, elegant evenings.
