The Ludovisi-Ares is a Roman marble sculpture of Mars from the Antonine period, around the 2nd century A.D. It copies a Greek bronze original from the late 4th century B.C., which is associated with Scopas or Lysippus. The statue was found in Rome around 1622. The exact location where it was found can no longer be determined. The statue came into the collection of Cardinal Ludovico Ludovisi and was restored. Its name also comes from the Ludovisi family. It was very quickly attributed to Mars, the god of war. Exhibited in the Ludovisi’s Palazzo Grande from 1633, the statue was moved to the Ludovisi’s Palazzo on Via Veneto around 1885. The Italian state acquired the marble statue in 1901. It has been on display in Palazzo Altemps, part of the Museo Nazionale, since 1997.
The sculpture depicts a youthful god, presumably Ares, or hero, sitting on a rock with his left foot resting on his helmet. His shield leans against him on his right. In his left hand he holds the sword in its scabbard. A gathered robe is wrapped around his waist, one end falling over his right thigh so that his sex is visible. The other end of the robe is slung over his left forearm. A small Eros sits between his feet, looking up at the god and suggesting a connection to Aphrodite, similar to that which existed between the goddess and Ares, the god of war. The unevenness and supporting structures of the left side, especially the shoulder, and the lack of detail on the left half of the head indicate that the statue was part of a group with a statue of Aphrodite. It is possible that a second Eros sat on the left shoulder. With the life-size bronze replica statue, you are buying a museum- quality masterpiece in which every last detail is correct. The sculpture is customised for you when you buy it. It corresponds to the original in its state of preservation from before 1800.
This seated figure of Ares, the Roman god of war, was far more famous in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries than it is today. Numerous copies were created based on the Roman model, especially in the Baroque period. The art historian Winckelmann, with his seventh sense for beautiful masculinity, praised them highly. Numerous copies were made for wealthy art collectors, along with many smaller replicas as inexpensive souvenirs. In 1750, a marble copy was given to Frederick II of Prussia as a gift from the French King Louis XV.
He had the Ares placed in the vestibule of Sanssouci Palace in Potsdam. It still stands there today. A copy of the Ares, cast in bronze in Florence around 1910, found its way into Hermann Göring’s art collection at Carinhall and has stood in front of Spandau Citadel since 1964.
The sculpture is produced as a bronze casting using the traditional lost wax technique.
The negative mould is a plaster cast of the original made in Rome before 1800. The finished bronze sculpture is of museum quality and corresponds to the original in its state of preservation from before 1800.
In addition to the classic bronze casting, you can also buy the Ares Ludovisi replica statue in two other moulds. The marble cast from powdered genuine white marble. And the new moulding of the statue by sculptors from a single block of white marble. If you are interested in such a mould, please do not hesitate to contact us. We look forward to receiving your e-mail or phone call.

For enthusiasts seeking an authentic, antique aesthetic, we present a groundbreaking innovation: a faithfully recreated surface finish that matches precisely what the ancient audience would have admired. Thanks to the spectacular research findings published by the Louvre Museum in late 2022, we are now able to replicate the surface of ancient life-sized bronzes with remarkable accuracy. The multi-year study of the Charioteer of Delphi, conducted using cutting-edge technology, revealed that the statue, aside from minor details such as the eyes, headband, and belt, once displayed a high-gloss, golden sheen reminiscent of subtly shimmering gold leaf. It is therefore highly likely that renowned ancient sites, such as Delphi, Olympia, and Delos, presented themselves to ancient visitors with bronze statues gleaming in golden splendour.
This effect was achieved through the use of bronze with a 10% tin content. Armed with this scientifically substantiated knowledge, we can now offer an authentically recreated, antique surface for our reproductions of ancient life-sized bronzes – a level of precision that was unattainable prior to these 2022 research advancements.
