Origin and location of the original model for the casting of the antique bronze figure

A large bronze statue is known as the Jockey of Artemision: A boy riding a horse. It dates from around 150-140 BC. It is an original bronze statue from ancient Greece and a rare example of a racehorse in Greek sculpture. The artist is unknown. The statue was found in 1926 in an ancient shipwreck off the Greek Cape Artemision. Further parts were recovered in 1936 and reassembled in 1972. The 2.9 metre long and 2.1 metre high. The equestrian statue is on display in the National Archaeological Museum in Athens.

The horse and rider are depicted as if the horse is leaping away in mid-gallop, with its hind legs on the ground and its front legs raised. Engraved on the horse’s right thigh is the image of the goddess Nike holding a wreath in her upraised hands – a hallmark of racehorses in ancient Greece. The horse towers over its jockey, a boy only 84 centimetres tall and around 10 years old. Based on the physiognomy and the original black patinated bronze, he could be from Ethiopia. His hairstyle is Greek. He is riding bareback, wearing sandals, a short chiton and looking back over his left shoulder to watch his opponents in the race. His facial features, especially the wrinkles on his forehead, reflect both pain and passion. With the 2.9 x 2.1 metre bronze statue, you are buying a perfect replica of the ancient original of the Jockey of Artemision. The equestrian statue is also available in our online shop as a marble cast or as a newly carved marble statue. In either case, you are buying a unique piece that is personally made for you and signed with your name.

Antique sculpture. Buy museum quality bronze castings online

The antique bronze figure is cast using the traditional lost wax technique as a high-quality bronze casting. The basis for the negative mould required for this is a scan of the original sculpture in the National Archaeological Museum in Athens, which was created in 2017.

Cast marble & marble sculpture from the sculptor

In addition to the classic bronze casting, we also offer two other moulds for the statue shown here. You can buy the equestrian figure as a marble casting made of powdered genuine white marble or have it carved by a sculptor from a single block of white marble. If you are interested in such a mould, please do not hesitate to contact us. We look forward to receiving your e-mail or phone call.

Patinating the statue

Patination marks the final step in the finishing process of a bronze statue. The patina simulates the natural oxidation process that causes the bronze to weather differently over time, depending on the environmental influences on the copper alloy. We have various patina recipes in our repertoire, including one that closely matches the patina of preserved antique bronze statues. We will be happy to provide you with samples of suitable patinas in advance.

Individualisation of the statue

Each statue cast by us is engraved in the base with a serial number, date of manufacture and our company logo. The base is also engraved with your name, a lettering, the occasion of production, your own company logo or additional engraving as required.
