Description of the Roman bust of Arminius

This marble bust of a young man shows his head slightly larger than life-size. The marble bust comes from the British Museum and was formerly part of the Townley Collection. The bust flaunts a rich head of hair and, in contrast, no beard but a light fuzz above the upper lip.

The original was found in Trajan’s Forum and apparently belonged to the statue of a barbarian leader, perhaps a figure that formed one of the ornaments of a triumphal arch. It was acquired shortly after the find by an Englishman, Mr Lyde Browne, and later came to the British Museum via the Townley Collection.

The bust probably depicts Arminius, the youthful prince of the Germanic Cherusci. (* around 17 BC; † around 21 AD). An outstanding general who inflicted one of the most devastating defeats on the Romans at the Battle of Varus in 9 AD with the destruction of three legions.

The expressive facial features, determination, virility and sensuality of this head match the description given by Velleius Paterculus of Arminius’ features; and the age indicated in the marble also perfectly matches that of Arminius, who was about thirty-four years old at the time of his defeat.

Patination marks the final step in the finishing process of a bronze statue. The patina simulates the natural oxidation process that causes the bronze to weather differently over time, depending on the environmental influences on the copper alloy. We have various patina recipes in our repertoire, including one that corresponds well to the patina of preserved antique bronze statues. We would be happy to provide you in advance with possible Patina samples are available.
