The Boxer at Rest is a 128 centimetre high, original Greek antique bronze statue. It was found in 1885 near the Baths of Constantine in Rome at the same time as the statue of the so-called Hellenistic Prince. The artist of the statue is unclear, as is the date of its creation. A period from the 4th century B.C. to the middle of the 1st century B.C. is being discussed. The sculpture is located in the Palazzo Massimo alle Terme in Rome.
The face of this muscular boxer has a number of injuries typical of this sport, such as thickened ears, swelling under the eyes, a deformed nose, old scars and fresh lacerations with blood clots underneath. The pugilist’s facial expression looks alert and attentive. He is definitely an experienced professional athlete who is resting after the fight. The leather straps for the fistfight are still on his hands and forearms. Buy a replica statue of the pugilist from the Quirinal in our online shop. We can produce these not only as museum-quality bronze replicas, but also as marble casts or as newly cast marble sculptures.
This exciting question has still not been answered. Among other things, it is being discussed:
Polydeukos, one of the two Dioscuri, defeated the Bebrykian king Amykos in a fistfight on his voyage on the Argo to Colchis. Either of these two experienced pugilists could be depicted.
Dares, an arrogant young pugilist, challenged the ageing Trojan hero Entellus to a fistfight and lost dramatically. One of the two could be depicted. The fight is immortalised in Virgil’s Aeneid.
One of the most famous martial artists of ancient Greece. In his career as a pugilist alone, he is said to have remained undefeated for 22 years.
The Boxer at Rest is one of only nine large Greek bronzes preserved in the original. This gives it elementary, unique significance. In this bronze statue we see the radiant light of ancient Greece, unmediated, unadulterated and with great emotional impact. The other eight original Greek bronze statues that have been preserved are the Charioteer of Delphi, the Hellenistic Prince, the Artemision Bronze, the Jockey of Artemision, the Riace Bronze A and Riace Bronze B, the Marathon Boy and the Croatian Apoxyomenos.
The sculpture you buy from us is produced as a bronze casting using the traditional lost wax technique. The negative mould required for this is based on a plaster cast of the statue in the cast collection of the University of Cambridge, as well as a photogrammetry of the original in the Palazzo Massimo alle Terme in Rome. The finished bronze sculpture is of museum quality and corresponds to the original in Rome down to the smallest detail.
In addition to classic bronze casting, we also offer two other moulds for the statues shown here. Marble casting from powdered genuine white marble. And the new moulding of the statue by sculptors from a single block of white marble. If you are interested in such a mould, please do not hesitate to contact us. We look forward to receiving your e-mail or phone call.
Patination marks the final step in the finishing process of the purchased bronze statue. The patina simulates the natural oxidation process that causes the bronze to weather differently over time, depending on the environmental influences on the copper alloy. We have various patina recipes in our repertoire, including one that corresponds well to the patina of preserved antique bronze statues. We will be happy to provide you with samples of suitable patinas in advance.
Each statue cast by us is engraved in the base with a serial number, date of manufacture and our company logo. The base is also engraved with your name, a lettering, the occasion of production, your own company logo or additional engraving as required.
Our life-size cast bronze replicas are therefore not only artistic replicas, but also timeless reminders that will preserve your legacy for generations to come. By engraving your name, the date of purchase and the occasion on the base, this statue becomes an everlasting symbol of your most personal life achievement, your significance in this world and your work there.
Ancient Greek bronze statues and their masterfully crafted Roman marble replicas were the sensual and visual mirror of these two advanced civilisations for over a millennium. After their rediscovery during the Renaissance, these statues were once again world-famous and a symbol of the emergence of modernity. The statue made for you and with your name as the donor will forever be a reminder of your personality and achievements in the ancient traditions of Delphi and Rome.
Antique statues are hardly available in the original. Since their rediscovery in the Renaissance, expensive replicas have been made for castles, their parks and also for the mansions of the wealthy bourgeoisie. During this period, a canon for the installation and placement of these works of art was created that developed into modern times. Here you will find an overview of particularly beautiful locations for antique statues. We also offer you an overview of some publicly accessible gardens and parks, each of which has an impressive collection of ancient sculptures. With specific details of which statues can be seen where. Go travelling, let yourself be inspired!
