Buy Crouching Aphrodite statue as a marble or bronze cast of the original

The crouching Aphrodite is a Hellenistic model of Venus being surprised while bathing. The type typically depicts the goddess crouching, with her right knee close to the ground, her head turned to the right and her right arm stretched over her left shoulder to cover her breasts.

The statue is attributed to the Hellenistic sculptor Doidalses. It is thought to have been created around 250 BC. Alongside the Venus of Knidos by Praxiteles, the sculpture represents another type of unclothed Aphrodite in ancient art. The original bronze artwork has been lost. Similar to the Venus of Knidos, however, there are numerous replicas, some of which show a shy, defensive pose and others a more revealing one.

The earliest mention of the sculpture can be found in the Natural History of Pliny the Elder, which describes the “Venus washing herself” in the temple of Jupiter Stator. As there are an incredible number of ancient versions of this sculpture, it is difficult to categorise these variants in terms of time or commissioner. The variants also often differ in whether or not there is a water jug or a small figure of Eros.

The replica of this sculpture offered in our online shop is a heavily restored version of the plaster cast taken from an original crouching Venus in the Louvre in Paris. This Crouching Venus in the Louvre was acquired from the Roman Borghese collection in 1807. The extensive restoration of the plaster cast is loosely based on the Aphrodite of Praxiteles, the Venus of Knidos.

Description

Antique statue, cast bronze in museum quality

The sculpture is produced as a bronze cast using the traditional lost wax technique. The basis for the negative mould required for this is an extensively completed plaster cast of the original in the Louvre.

Cast marble & marble sculpture from the sculptor

In addition to classic bronze casting, we also offer two other moulds for the statues shown here. Marble casting from powdered genuine white marble. And the new moulding of the statue by sculptors from a single block of white marble. If you are interested in such a mould, please do not hesitate to contact us. We look forward to receiving your e-mail or phone call.

Patinating the statue

The patination of the cast bronze statue purchased from us marks the final step in the process.
Finishing process of a bronze statue. The patina simulates the natural oxidation process that causes the bronze to weather differently over time, depending on the environmental influences on the copper alloy. We have various patina recipes in our repertoire, including one that corresponds well to the patina of preserved antique bronze statues. We will be happy to provide you with samples of suitable patina in advance.
