Original sea king bust for recasting in bronze or marble

This colossal, immensely expressive head of a bearded man is a marble bust from the Vatican Museums. The work is probably a sea god with a crown and horns. The bust is on display in the Sala dei Busti or Hall of Busts in the Pio Clementino Museum under the inventory number ORIG918. The inscription reads: Deita Marina. There is no precise information about where the bust was found, when it was found or how it came to be in the Vatican collections. Descriptions and illustrations of the bust have been available since the early 19th century.

Century in circulation

From an illustration of the bust in a book from 1792 with the long title “Il Museo Pio- Clementino descritto da Ennio Quirino Visconti Direttore del Museo Capitolino – Tomo sesto – Dedicato alla Santita di Nostro Signore PIO SESTO Pontefice Massimo. Edito da Luigi Mirri / Mercante di quadri incontro il Palazzo Bernini. In Roma MDCCXCII con Privilegio Pontificio. Opera dedicata ai Busti del Museo Pio-Clementino” shows that the bust of the sea god was already in the Hall of Busts in 1792 and that it had been found in Pozzuoli near Naples.

A much later image, an early photograph bears the signature: Ed. Alinari P.L.N. 6628 ROMA – Museo Vaticano. Dio Marino (scultura antica).

There are two round shapes in the man’s beard, which could be dolphins or testicles. Testicles could indicate that the bust is of Uranus, whose genitals were cut off and thrown into the sea. Aphrodite, the foam-born, emerged from the foam of his genitals.

Bust of a sea king – buy life-size bronze cast of the original

The bust that you can buy online from us is produced as a bronze cast using the traditional lost wax technique. The negative mould required for this is based on a plaster cast of the original in the Vatican.

Cast marble & marble sculpture from the sculptor

In addition to the classic bronze casting, we also offer two other moulds for the bust shown here. You can order the Sea King bust as a marble cast made of powdered genuine white marble. You can also order a new mould of the bust by a sculptor from a single block of white marble. If you are interested in such a mould, please do not hesitate to contact us. We look forward to receiving your e-mail or phone call.

Patinating the bust

Patination marks the final step in the finishing process of a bronze statue. The patina simulates the natural oxidation process that causes the bronze to weather differently over time, depending on the environmental influences on the copper alloy. We have various patina recipes in our repertoire, including one that corresponds well to the patina of preserved antique bronze statues. We will be happy to provide you with samples of suitable patinas in advance.

Individualisation of the life-size bust

Every statue and bust cast by us is engraved in the base with a serial number, date of manufacture and our company logo. The base is also engraved with your name, a lettering, the occasion of production, your own company logo or additional engraving as required. Please let us know the engraving details when you make your purchase.

Memory cast in bronze in the radiant light of antiquity

Ancient Greek bronze statues and their masterfully crafted Roman marble replicas were the sensual and visual mirror of these two advanced civilisations for over a millennium. After their rediscovery during the Renaissance, these statues once again became world-famous and symbolised the emergence of modernity.

In keeping with the ancient traditions of Delphi and Rome, the statue made for you and with your name as the donor will forever be a reminder of your personality and achievements.
