Lycian Apollo – Original statue for replica

The type of Apollo Lyceus, also known as the Lycian Apollo, which goes back to Praxiteles, is known from many small figurines, as well as from full-size statues and Athenian coins from the 1st century BC.

This is a type of statue of Apollo showing the god resting on a support (a tree trunk or tripod), with his right forearm touching the crown of his head and his hair fastened in plaits on the top of his head in a hairstyle typical of childhood.

The name Lyceus comes from a lost work described by Lucian as being exhibited in the Lyceum, one of the grammar schools of Athens, although it is not attributed to any sculptor. According to Lucian, the god, who is leaning on a support with the bow in his left hand and his right hand resting on his head, is depicted “as if resting after long exertion”.

The version of the Lycian Apollo offered in our online shop is based on the plaster cast of a Roman copy from the second quarter of the 2nd century AD – after the Greek original attributed to Praxiteles. The Roman copy was discovered in Smyrna and ended up in the Louvre. There, in 1901, the plaster cast was made directly from the Louvre version. Over time, the characteristic pose with one arm resting above the head has been equated with “resting” in many works of art, regardless of whether they depict men or women.

Description

Antique statue, cast bronze in museum quality

The sculpture is produced as a bronze cast using the traditional lost wax technique. The basis for the negative mould required for this is a plaster cast made in 1901 from the original in the Louvre.
