Description of the statue for the museum-quality recasting
A young man is stretched out on a rock. His posture is provocatively lascivious. His head is lowered onto his shoulder. His right arm is crossed behind his head, his left arm, now broken off, hangs over the side of a rocky outcrop.
The young man seems to be fast asleep. But is he really? If you take a closer look, you will realise that he is mistaken. His rough yet sensual face is tense. His eyebrows are drawn together over his closed eyelids. His open mouth indicates heavy breathing. The wreath of ivy in his hair tells us why, as such wreaths are worn mainly by night owls. Intoxicated by wine and exhausted from dancing and partying, the young man has fallen into a restless, restless sleep.
The meaning and function of the figure only becomes clear when you walk round the other side of the statue. The small ponytail that can be seen on the back identifies the young man as a satyr, one of those half-animal creatures from the entourage of Dionysus, the god of ecstasy. It is therefore not a human being at all, but a mythical creature. It is fitting that his size far exceeds human dimensions.
This all explains the most important features of the depiction: intoxication, debauchery and sexual desire are part of the character of a satyr. They demonstrate the power of Dionysus, in whose honour the statue was probably erected in a sanctuary.
This marble sculpture dates from around 220 BC and is therefore one of the few original Greek sculptures preserved in good condition and not a Roman copy. The Greek statue was stolen from Greece in Roman times and brought to Italy. It was found in Rome in 1624. The original marble statue is now in the Munich Glyptothek, having been acquired by Ludwig I from the Barberini Collection, from which it takes its name.

Patinating the statue
Patination marks the final step in the finishing process of a bronze statue. The patina simulates the natural oxidation process that causes the bronze to weather differently over time, depending on the environmental influences on the copper alloy. We have various patina recipes in our repertoire, including one that corresponds well to the patina of preserved antique bronze statues. We will be happy to provide you with samples of suitable patinas in advance.
