Origin and location of the original statue for the plaster cast replica

The bronze statue known as Artemision Bronze was discovered in 1926 near an ancient shipwreck near Euboea. It depicts a muscular man with far-reaching arm movements. The 2.09 metre high statue with an arm length of over two metres dates back to around 460 BC. The creator is unknown. Kalamis, Onatas of Aegina or Myron are mentioned. The so-called Jockey of Artemision was also found in the same shipwreck.

The statue of a muscular, naked man with a beard stands on a slightly raised leg to maintain balance. The right hand once held a throwing implement, while the left arm acts as a bearing line and counterweight. The gaze of the head is directed precisely at the target of the throw. The mouth remains closed and the eyes are fixed on the target. Whiskers and forelocks hang down in a braid- like arrangement, while the hair on the head is held together by a braided band. Although the body is tensed directly in front of the throw, the face radiates calm and concentration. Researchers see in it either a hero, Poseidon or Zeus, depending on the lost throwing implement: spear for Heroe, trident for Poseidon and bundle of lightning for Zeus. The calm facial expression and the precise alignment of the head with the throwing target give the statue a timeless appeal. The original can be found in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens. The plaster cast replica offered in our online shop is based on this antique original statue. You can buy this life-size bronze sculpture with a height of 2.09 metres from us as a museum-quality replica.

Description

Historical significance, trivia

The Artemision bronze is one of the nine original surviving large Greek bronzes, which gives it a fundamental, unique significance. In this bronze statue we see the light of Greek classicism unadulterated and in its original form. The other eight surviving Greek bronze statues include the Charioteer of Delphi, the Boxer at Rest, the Hellenistic Prince, the Jockey of Artemision, the Riace bronzes Riace A and Riace B, the Marathon Boy and the Croatian Apoxyomenos. Other Greek masterpieces are either unknown to us or have only survived through their Roman marble copies.

Greece joined the Council of Europe in 1949 and donated a life-size bronze replica of Artemision Bronze to the organisation in 1998. The statue is located in front of the Council of Europe’s main building in Strasbourg. A bronze plaque documents the donation.

Patinating the post-cast statue

Patination marks the final step in the finishing process of a bronze statue. The patina simulates the natural oxidation process that causes the bronze to weather differently over time, depending on the environmental influences on the copper alloy. We have various patina recipes in our repertoire, including one that corresponds well to the patina of preserved antique bronze statues. We will be happy to provide you with samples of suitable patinas in advance.
