The Hellenistic Prince is an ancient Greek bronze statue in an excellent state of preservation. It was found in 1885 near the Baths of Constantine in Rome. Its origin is estimated to date back to the second century BC. The creator of the sculpture is unknown. The original, measuring 204 centimetres in height (foot to head), can be found in the Museo Nazionale Romano in Rome. In its final appearance, the statue measures a total height of 253 cm (including the length of the spear).
The Hellenistic-style statue, which serves as the original model for the bronze casting, depicts a naked, muscular man leaning on a spear in a heroic pose. The right hand of his arm, which is brought behind his body, rests on his gluteus. His weight rests on his right leg. This type of statue thus harks back to older models from the 5th century BC. The head shows a detailed, lush, curly head of hair, while the short, somewhat unkempt full beard, which reaches down to the neck and was subsequently chiselled, is striking. The structure of the forehead, deep-set eyes and the reproduction of crow’s feet and bags under the eyes are traditional methods of characterising an adult male. Like the original, the replica bronze cast sculpture of the Hellenistic Prince measures 253 centimetres in height.
This exciting question is still being discussed today. Among other things, it is being debated here:
Several rulers from the Attalid dynasty could be considered here. The unusual facial moulding in particular corresponds to images of some Attalids.
A Hellenistic-style statue in honour of the Roman general Quintus Caecilius Metellus Macedonicus.
Polydeukos, one of the two Dioscuri, defeated the Bebrykian king Amykos in a fistfight on his voyage with the Argo to Colchis. This would place the statue in direct relation to the so-called Boxer at Rest, a statue that was found at the same time and in the same place and could represent Amykos.
The Hellenistic Prince is one of only nine large Greek bronzes preserved in the original. This gives it elementary, unique significance. In this bronze statue, we see the radiant light of ancient Greece, unmediated, unadulterated and with great emotional impact. The other eight original Greek bronze statues are the Charioteer of Delphi, the Boxer at Rest, the Artemision Bronze, the Jockey of Artemision, the Riace Bronze A and Riace Bronze B, the Marathon Boy and the Croatian Apoxyomenos. Other Greek masterpieces are either not known to us at all or only through the mirror of their Roman marble copies.
The replica of the ancient Hellenistic Prince sculpture is produced as a bronze casting using the traditional lost wax technique. The negative mould required for this is based on a plaster cast made of the original sculpture in Rome in 1899. The finished bronze sculpture is of museum quality. After casting, the fine beard fuzz of the Hellenistic Prince is elaborately chiselled by hand using chisel irons, chisels, files, scrapers and grinding and polishing tools – an art in itself.
In addition to the classic bronze casting, we also offer two other moulds for the Hellenistic Prince statue shown here. The marble casting from powdered genuine white marble. And the new moulding of the statue by sculptors from a single block of white marble. If you are interested in such a mould, please do not hesitate to contact us. We look forward to receiving your e-mail or phone call.
We offer two exceptional patina options for bronze statues. The first is the classical patina, which beautifully captures the natural weathered appearance of bronze. Since the rediscovery of ancient life-sized bronzes, this patina has become the preferred choice and is available in up to three popular variations.
For enthusiasts seeking an authentic, antique aesthetic, we present a groundbreaking innovation: a faithfully recreated surface finish that matches precisely what the ancient audience would have admired. Thanks to the spectacular research findings published by the Louvre Museum in late 2022, we are now able to replicate the surface of ancient life-sized bronzes with remarkable accuracy. The multi-year study of the Charioteer of Delphi, conducted using cutting-edge technology, revealed that the statue, aside from minor details such as the eyes, headband, and belt, once displayed a high-gloss, golden sheen reminiscent of subtly shimmering gold leaf. It is therefore highly likely that renowned ancient sites, such as Delphi, Olympia, and Delos, presented themselves to ancient visitors with bronze statues gleaming in golden splendour.
This effect was achieved through the use of bronze with a 10% tin content. Armed with this scientifically substantiated knowledge, we can now offer an authentically recreated, antique surface for our reproductions of ancient life-sized bronzes – a level of precision that was unattainable prior to these 2022 research advancements.
